Hand-Held Echo

2 cards

Notes

Handheld / focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS / POCUS)

  • Portable, ultra-compact (some smartphone-sized) probes.
  • Limited imaging modes (usually 2-D and color; some devices offer PW).
  • Not a substitute for a comprehensive study.
  • Suited to targeted, binary questions at the bedside: pericardial effusion (yes/no), gross LV function (normal/reduced/severely reduced), IVC size and collapsibility, gross valve pathology screen.
  • Operator training and image quality are the main limiters.
  • Documentation and follow-up formal studies are essential when abnormalities are identified.

What questions is handheld/POCUS echo best suited to answer?
Targeted binary questions: pericardial effusion (yes/no), gross LV function (normal/reduced/severely reduced), IVC size and collapsibility, gross valve pathology screen.

Can a handheld echo replace a comprehensive TTE?
No. POCUS complements but does not replace a full study — it is limited in modes, views, and quantitative measurement capability.
