Handheld / focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS / POCUS)
- Portable, ultra-compact (some smartphone-sized) probes.
- Limited imaging modes (usually 2-D and color; some devices offer PW).
- Not a substitute for a comprehensive study.
- Suited to targeted, binary questions at the bedside: pericardial effusion (yes/no), gross LV function (normal/reduced/severely reduced), IVC size and collapsibility, gross valve pathology screen.
- Operator training and image quality are the main limiters.
- Documentation and follow-up formal studies are essential when abnormalities are identified.
